Chopin: The Complete Preludes

This review is from: Chopin: The Complete Preludes (Audio CD) Vanessa Perez is a rare breed of pianist - a sensitive and passionate player that lights up the keyboard whenever appropriate. The perfect example of this is the contrast between the incredibly moving 15th Prelude (the Raindrop) and the 16th Prelude. In the Raindrop, her playing ranges from tender to deep to even quite intense. Just after, Miss Perez launches a thunderous run through one of the most exciting moment of the Preludes. Overall, her approach to the Preludes is illuminating - almost like a chameleon that changes colors to fit in with its changing environment. The additional Preludes, rarely played, are quite a delight. She makes a compelling argument that the works ought to be performed more often. Yet there is so much more to the CD, with the Barcarolle and Fantasy also on the program. Any pianist that can play the Preludes, Barcarolle, and Fantasy this well is a superb pianist. The works demand so many different types of qualities from the musician. In the Barcarolle, she builds from the lovely opening to build waves of momentum that create a heroic element to the work. Meanwhile, her Chopin Fantasy possesses all of the drama and excitement necessary to showcase this fiery woprk, easily one of Chopin's lengthiest single movement solo works. The sound on the recording is excellent, and the piano sound is perfectly suited to the repertoire.

It was wonderful! This was my first opportunity to get to amazon to buy this CD and I'm thrilled to be the first to tell how great this CD is. I've only heard one of the two CDs and the one I listened to was nearly 75-80 minutes long. Every tract sounded very clear with no backgroung noise. You won't be disappointed!! If you feel tense or stressed, listening to these selections will calm your nerves and renew your spirit. From tract to tract, each has mind easing flow that can help enable you to relax your breathing and clear your thoughts. You will be filled with serenity and peace. In my profession I have listened to many different types of relaxing and classical variations of compositions so I can tell you that you will not regret buying this collection of music.

Dvorak: Symphonic Works [Box set]

No, the sound is not modern demonstration class but wholly acceptable. At this current price a no-brainer.

Concerto, One Night in Central Park

This review is from: Concerto, One Night in Central Park (Audio CD) I will probably never get to see Andrea Bocelli perform live in Central Park. Listening to this disc is the next best thing. I don't categorize him as just an opera singer. He can sing any kind of song perfectly. This disc is proof of that. I love his duet with Tony Bennett entitled "New York New York" This song is a celebration of a great state. "Funiculi Funicula" is a song with an upbeat playful tone. I like this song a lot. "Di Quella Pira" is a song that makes my spirit soar. This is a kind of song that gets me motivated to try something difficult. His duet entitled "The Prayer" with Celine Dion is a highlight on this disc. This song restores my faith in the power of prayer. "Ave Maria" is a song that touches my heart. I love his version of this song. "La Donna e Mobile" makes me wants me find a partner and dance around the floor. More is a Sinatra song, but Andrea makes it his own. This tune is very romantic. Chris Botti lends his talents playing the trumpet on this track. I absolutely love this song. Andrea puts his spin on the gospel song "Amazing Grace". This song really moves me. "Volare" is a song with a swooning romantic tone. The music on this disc is superb.

Bruckner: 9 Symphonies [Box Set] [Box set, Import]

This review is from: Bruckner: 9 Symphonies [Box Set] (Audio CD) This is unquestionably one of Karajan's greatest achievements. And it's hard to imagine a better Bruckner cycle than this. I've listened to Bruckner for a long time and own at least 5 recordings of each symphony. Every one of these performances ranks up there with the best (I must single out the performance of the 5th, absolutely THE best I've ever heard!). There is not a weak performance in the box. And you simply will not hear these symphonies played better than here. The Berlin Philharmonic is glorious. Karajan was often accused of producing beauty just for beauty's sake, but here it is always at the service of the music. In these grand, epic works where other conductors can get lost or lose tension in certain areas, Karajan has an incredible ability to comprehend the structure of each movement, keep it flowing, and make each transition from section to section sound effortless and natural. A great term I once heard to describe it was "architectural far-sightedness". Tempo choices throughout strike me as having an ideal balance of energy and grandeur. And the all important Adagios have plenty of time to breathe without ever dragging. There have been some slightly negative comments about the sound quality. I thought the analog recordings (4-9) were excellent. All the sections of the orchestra were brilliantly caught. I would say some of the big climaxes in the symphonies recorded in early digital (1-3) sound a little harsh and congested, but nothing major enough to detract from the performances. Also, Karajan uses the 1889 version of the 3rd. Though I prefer the 1873 or 1877 versions, it's no big deal. Whether you know Bruckner well, or you've never heard a note he's written, I give this set my strongest possible recommendation. It's a perfect introduction to this music, and a perfect addition to any Classical library. (And getting this 9 disc set for 40 bucks is just robbery!)

Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether

My 5 month old daughter LOVES her Sophie the Giraffe toy! This toy is absolutely wonderful in every way. Sophie is made of soft rubber and makes a pleasant-sounding squeak whenever any part of her body is squeezed, so even a young baby can elicit a reaction from the toy with minimal effort.

I don't know what it is about Sophie, but whenever my daughter plays with her, she gets very vocal and talkative.

I saw another review which referred to this toy as "a glorified dog toy". That reviewer is mistaken, and simply doesn't realize the value of this toy.

- Sophie's body, while soft, has several areas of thicker rubber (the nubs on her head, her ears, and her feet) which are perfect for teething babies to gnaw on for relief.
- Sophie's contrasting colors (spots) are visually stimulating to a baby.
- She is easy to grip given her long, thin neck.
- This toy is made of 100% natural rubber and uses food-grade paint (SAFE!).
- This is a quality baby toy which will last for many years.

I would much rather pay $20 for a safe, engaging toy for my baby, than pay $5 for some piece of junk with lead paint.

Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden

I bought one of these last year for my nieces. I also got one for me, and I'm in my 30's. I waited until the spring time to send in my caterpillar certificate. They came in their own little container with just enough food. So you don't need to feed them anything. I tried to put some real food such as leaves from the plants they like to eat in the wild, but they preferred the food that came with them. I think I received 6 caterpillars and they all turned into butterflies. I let them go a day or two after they emerged. Kids are completely fascinated by the process from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. One word of caution, it may not be the best thing to get for Christmas since you may have to wait until spring to get your caterpillars. They will send them in the winter, but I didn't want the butterflies to die on me or freeze to death if I let them go.

I just bought this to take over for our soon-to-be adopted infant. I was very happy with the small size and weight (perfect for an infant to hold). But most of all, the sound quality is fantastic (and not too loud) - and not electronic sounding at all. And the tunes are all pleasing to the ear and not annoying kid versions. I will like listening to it as much as our son!

Baby Spring Float Sun Canopy, Colors May Vary

We were able to use this float for the first time this weekend. Our son is almost 4 months old and appx 18 lbs so I wasn't sure if he was still going to be too small to use it. Once we put him in the right way (front and back sides are not marked), he had an absolute blast. He was able to lean forward (he can't hold himself up yet) over the inflatable cushion and put his arms around both sides. His toys were within his reach in the convenient mesh ring and the canopy kept ALL sun off him (he has red hair and is extremely fair). He was able to kick his legs and got lots of exercise. I would highly recommend this product to everyone- just be sure to keep a close eye on them if they can't hold themself up. LOVE IT and can't wait to use it again!

Nerf N-Strike Maverick - Colors May Vary

I'm the dad of a 7 year old boy who has two of these, he received his frist one when he was about 5. He has more fun with them, making this a good value for the dollar. The gun itself is fairly durable being able to withstand being stepped on, thrown against either a hardwood floor or a wall (as hard as a 7 year old can throw it). After over a year of use, one of the two guns did experience a failure with the recoil spring and although I was able to fix it (after an hour), I don't think the average person could have fixed it. After several months of use, the darts have a tendancy to enlarge around the base, causing them to fail to fire unless the dart is pushed in firmly which negates the "rapid fire" feature of the revolving gun compared to similar single shot guns where you load a single dart after each shot.

As far as safety, yes, little 7 year old boys will run around with these and attempt to shoot each other. I've been hit scores of times, at less than 5 feet, in the face and even a couple times on the eyelid and IMHO I would be hard pressed to believe that even a direct hit in the eye could cause lasting damage. Bottom line, it's the best toy dart gun I've seen for little kids, a great value but I wish the darts (of which you can buy tons of spares) were a little more durable.

Diablo III: Standard Edition

Diablo 1 and 2 was a great Action-RPG game. Sadly, Diablo 3 is just an action game. Everything is done for you. Strength/Dexterity? They increase those automatically with each level. Character skills? They give them to you when you level (need need to choose what skills you want). The difference between my level 40 Barbarian and your level 30 Barbarian? NOTHING. Well, you may have better armor, but that's all -- our skills and attributes are identical.

Hey, look, I found a cool armor I can't wear yet. Why? Because it's just a level limit. That's all. If I want my Wizard to wear a super heavy plate armor, I no longer need to increase strength to wear it -- I either need to be high enough level or Blizzard simply makes in "unusable" by my class.

It's as if they took all the stuff from World of Warcraft and threw a Diablo Interface on it. Seriously -- I have to spend gold to increase my Stash-size? Really? I need to dis-enchant magic weapons and use the raw materials to create new enchanted items? Really? They simply took the Enchanter class from World of Warcraft and turned it into a shop keeper. Heck, did the Diablo 3 programmers ever actually PLAY Diablo before?

The answer is yes, because so Act 1 is an exact clone of the other games. Seriously, why am I still fighting bats, goat men, skeletons, and zombies 13 years after Diablo 2 came out? And you brought back King Leoric (with a terrible voice over) too? Really? I have to spend 2 hours fighting in the Tristan woods, Cemetery, Cathedral, and Den of Evil. Sound familiar? Yup, because that's what I had to do Diablo 1 and 2. Is there no creativity left at Blizzard? You guys really can't figure out how to create new world? It seems Blizzard literally took the monsters and areas of Diablo 1 and 2, and gave it a 3d-graphical-upgrade. It's like playing the original Pac-Man, but with newer graphics -- no real innovations at all.

Take a look at the Diablo 3 gameplay closely. Deep down inside, it's shallow.

ArmA 2: Combined Operations

THIS IS NOT a first person shooter! IF you run around like the kids do in first person shooter games,,,,,,, YOU WILL DIE! This is a simulator that needs one to think tactically. The only thing missing in Armed Assault combines arms is the smells, the dust, the flora, gun powder etc, but this is as close as going out to real battle situations as one can get. See you on the battle field.

Nightmare. Read this before you buy. The 2012 version has problems.
Crashed my pc twice just trying to get it runing and never got the issue solved.
Their customer service couldnt figure it out either. BIG HEAD ACHE for me...this biz owner.
My accountant is a QuickBooks expert 20yrs in the biz was on the phone with their support for 3 1/2 hrs and still couldn't get it to run right. She knew alot about the different versions and says some of the years (like 08) have alot of problems and 2012 is one of them. I did not consult her before I bought this one.
The Quickbooks customer service has super heavy accents and hard to understand but the big issue is that I got stuck with this purchase and can't get a refund or exchange.
Plaese beware and read all of the negatives here. I didnt do that and hopefully this may save someone else from getting stuck with junk like I did. I went in a different direction with my books and now have this useless software sitting on a self.

I have Photoshop CS5 on two desktops at home, one upstairs and one down and Adobe's license won't let me put it on a third, so I've got Elements 10 running on my laptop. And I have to admit that I thought I was going to feel cheated, not being able to have the full version of Photoshop with me when I'm on the road.

But I was pleasantly surprised. Ninety percent, maybe more, of what I do in Photoshop, I can do with Elements. In fact, I oftentimes find myself at Starbucks doing complete jobs with Elements, with no reason to go into Photoshop at all. I have to say, for those of you who don't want to shell out the big bucks for Photoshop, you just might find that Elements is all you'll ever need.

Filmed documentary styles, the movie tells the story of three high school boys who encounter some sort of alien ship or something, and then acquire superhuman powers of telekinesis. Predictably, things spiral out of control for the three. This is a realistic, and quite good film about a young man with problems who is unable to control the powers he discovers. His two friends try to help, but they are unable to control him. This one was a pleasant surprise and is the best movie of its kind since Paranormal Activity.

One For The Money

This review is from: One For the Money (DVD) Okay, so the casting doesn't meet your expectations. How can it? We all picture someone different in the roles. I wanted a sexier Ranger, a fatter Lula, a Danny DaVito for Vinny, and an Estelle Getty for Grandma Mazur. But all in all it was very enjoyable. I read a reviewer who said that Rex didn't seem to like Stephanie. Really? That's your review? The movie followed the book, the actors did a great job,and all Janet E fans will love this movie. Not every story has to have a tough modern woman as the lead. Morelli's last scene at Stef's front door put a smile on my face. Enjoy it for what it is.

The Vow

 "The Vow" 2012 is a romantic drama with some comedic moments thrown in. Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum play a young married couple whose lives take a tragic fate when they suffer a car accident. McAdams's character, Paige, isn't horribly disfigured or anything like that, but she suffers brain trauma which has blocked all memory of Tatum's character Leo. Leo tries to get regain her memory by trying to have her fall in love with him again. That's the movie. These romantic dramas get manufactured every year, and I have seen hundreds of them. However, I really liked the movie. It's true that these types of movies aren't original, but that doesn't bother me too much as long as the product is good. Like I said, I liked it primarily because

Rachel and Channing were very good in the leads. It's true that perhaps the "brain trauma" aspect of the plot could have been worked a bit more, I mean Paige remembers a lot of things that you wouldn't expect someone whose had brain trauma to remember, so this part of the movie could come out as implausible to some people. However, most people who have enjoyed the film don't care about that. This is a love story first and foremost, so it's more about seeing the characters going through the motions and trying to get those magic feelings for each other again The performances are excellent. Channing and Rachel have great chemistry. The acting is never forced and the characters are believable. Once we learn about Paige's past, we kind of understand why it's hard for her to remember Leo or at least not embrace it: Part of her life has been burdened by her overbearing father (played by Sam Neil) who doesn't quite respect her decisions, an ex-boyfriend Jeremy (Scott Speedman) who can't quite let her go, and other personal issues. Rachel McAdams plays her character well. She is pretty, nice personality, but a little unsure of herself. Tatum is good as the guy next door whose willing to put up with a lot all in the name of love. In fact, small parts of the movie are actually narrated by Leo as he tries to tell the audience what love really is. It's a nice addition to make the movie stand out a bit more from just being another movie. I liked his discussion of "moments of impact" in the film All in all it's just a nice romantic movie. Some might find some issues with the science part of the movie or say it's predictable, but it's a movie that you see to make you laugh and feel good at the end.

Mad Men Season 5, Ep. 9 "Dark Shadows"

This review is from: Mad Men Season 5 (Amazon Instant Video) There were no huge revelations in this episode, rather tiny bits of information about the characters of our beloved advertising executives and their loved ones are revealed. Don it seems, has actually grown as a person. No longer lying to those nearest and dearest to him has done him a world of good. The consequences of one final secret with Sally highlight just how much Don has changed, as does his relationship with Megan. Betty however is deteriorating, and so is her relationship with her children. The secret and Sally's eavesdropping reveals to her which parent is the better bet and the result doesn't favor Betty. Sally also learns that Betty manipulates her in her quest to make Don miserable. Betty has become an even more pathetic character than the Stepford wife we originally encountered. Everybody else is pretty much in a holding pattern. Like I said, a solid mid-season episode that was about incremental character development rather than huge plot arcs. As always, Mad Men remains one of the best shows on television.

Great Faulkner's Ghost (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) While much of the negative commentary concerned Levi Strauss's move away from domestic manufacturing has focused on the button-fly 501s, the bigger problem I have seen is with the old 1970's standby, the 505, which has a zipper as opposed to button fly. The variability on sizing and sew quality with the 505s is an issue if you are going to buy them online or mail order. You really have to try them on to see how they fit. The 501 are much easier to buy online or by mail order because the sizing is much less critical on the waist, which is the so-called "anti-fit" waist, meaning there is no curve to the rise (the distance between the crotch and the top of the waist), because the original 501s were merely cut down bib overalls which were made to hang, rather than be fitted to the waist. The biggest problem I have noted on the 505's is the variability in size in the thigh area, meaning that some fit baggy and some seem rather tight, even though they are theoretically the same size of a label. Since the 501s are more forgiving as far as sizing, if you are buying online you might consider them instead of 505s, unless you don't want the button fly.

The material and the dimensions are slightly different than the Eagle Creek but I use both interchangeably. The mesh is great for both seeing whats in the cube and breathability. I recommend packing cubes to anyone using carry on luggage and/or wanting to be organized. I use the medium sized cube packed in an Osprey Backpack for an entire weekend away. My 9 YO son saw these necklaces at a baseball tournament last weekend and REALLY wanted one, but I REALLY didn't want to fork over $30 for one necklace. The following Monday, I searched and found these on the internet and bought 3 (in the case of loss or breakage) at a reasonable price of less than $20 in total including standard shipping. They shipped to my Office on Monday, and arrived on Friday just before the end of the work day (I was bummed because I didn't think arrive in time). My son will be VERY surprised and will get to wear one of them this weekend during his last tournament this fall. Could NOT have worked out better. I'd buy again!
